Pena & Percival come through!
Percy and Pena! The heroes in the Bronx tonight. Good job by the Rays overcoming some adversity to notch a big win against their AL East rival in the new Yankee Stadium. Even as things looked bleak, Carlos Pena put the team on his shoulder and knocked a 3-run homer in the top of the tenth. And say what you want about Troy Percival, he came in and did his job to secure the victory.
Here are some of the things I noticed:
Here are some of the things I noticed:
- I was particularly upset about the 8th inning. I thought they should've stopped the game before Mark Teixeira's at-bat. I thought there was no way the Yankees score three on that hit in dryer conditions. In retrospect, if JP Howell had just retired Johnny Damon then it would've been a moot point.
- Andy Sonnanstine pitched a very encouraging game. If he can keep that up, the Rays will be fine. When Sonny is pitching strikes and keeping the ball down, he is money.
- The bullpen, except for JP Howell, had a great night. Dan Wheeler and Grant Balfour both came out and did their job. Troy Percival got his save, even if we had to watch Damon on 3rd.
- Dioner Navarro is only one hit away from leaving my Wall of Shame. He went 2 for 3 with an RBI. He finally looks like he's getting a clue at the plate.
